Appreciation Dinner @ Nando's Sunway Pyramid

Again, members turn up rather late. Gosh, I wish we could change that. Must we be caught up in the "Malaysian time" phenomenon?

Ahh... forget about it. Members that are invited eventually turned up. Food is served amost immediately. :) And when it comes to food, I'll never remember to take a picture of it when it is straight from the kitchen, piping hot and fresh. My gluttony took over my conscious mind. Hahaha.... Over-exaggerating yet quite true.

The ECs ordered chicken, of course. We ordered all 4 flavours to give members variety in choice. For side dishes we had old style chips, coleslaw, fresco salad, Mediterranean rice and potatoe wedges. All of us had free flow of soft drinks and iced lemon tea. (Yeeeeesssss........)

About 30 to 40 members including the new ECs were present.

After the meal, the ECs brought in Chocolate Indulgence from Secret Recipe for the birthday girl, President Lam Shi Ni.

So the whole lot sang birthday song to Shi Ni and she was seen blushing all the way. How coincident that her birthday fell on the same day as MBC's dinner.

It was a really enjoyable meal. Yes, I admit, I love Nando's. And we had dessert. :p

I hope next year will see a more happening Monash Buiness Club. And I hope we will do better and better.

I personally thank all members who have contributed to this club in every way. Thank you for your dedication and sacrifice.

My biggest tribute to Executive Committees of 2007, you guys had put in a lot of effort in bringing up this club (from scratch). We had managed to put through it, despite some committees leaving the club throughout the year. Thank you for giving us all the wonderful memories. It is an honour to work with all of you and to serve as the Webmaster and as a committee member of Monash Business Club.

Fundraising in semester 2

I have totally forgotten about it.
My bad. No excuses. Just plain stupid.

So, fundraising sale.

"Buy my Ribena Longan!"

So, this round, MBC's menu includes Ribena Longan (heard that we got the idea from William's), our specialty Chocolate Marshmellow, Nasi Lemak, Fruity Sprite, Chipsmore, Instant Noodles. Anything else? Wow so much variety.

Students are very happy to see instant noodles. I think that particular item is the bestseller. Of course, our Choc Marshmellow is the students' all time favourite.

Jacqueline: "In the end we didn't manage to sell off all our Ribena Longan, and gave it away to those who passed by our booth."

To be honest, the response is not very good. I think it was due to the lack of publicity and the wrong timing perhaps? Also, the location of our stall is kinda hidden.

Next time we shall use cups for Ribena Longan...... Lesson learnt.

Today, Jeannie is going to tell you a story about Monash Block Party and ~~hot chics~~ Motorshow.

We had our share of stall for the 2-day event. So, the members came to make some money...

curry chicken, 30 happy people and one room

The networking party started off at 6pm with GREAT food. Fried mee hoon, CURRY CHICKEN and potato, what else ah? Orange juice. The only food I think of is the curry chicken. =p

After filling up our stomaches, the organisers Yongqian and Shi Ni urged everyone to form a circle. Our ice-breaking game is to put our names into a balloon and let it mix in a pool of balloons in the middle of the circle. Then we have to pick a balloon randomly, burst it, get the paper which has the name and find that person. So, we get to know each other.

Then, the games begin!

Join MBC in Monash Ball!

Hey everyone! I'm sure some of you might be having dilemma whether or not to go to this year's Monash Ball. Facing problems like no friends want to go, can't find enough people to occupy a table, etc.

Well, you can always join MBC's table! It is our tradition to book a few tables in Monash Ball, exclusively for its members and their friends.

If you are interested to join MBC's table, please give your name to us ASAP! MUSA is offering early bird price of RM85 until end of this month only! After that, you have to pay RM95 for a ticket.

There is no limitation on the minimum or maximum number of people that can join the MBC table. Call Laura, Jacqueline or your department heads to give your names. Please prepare a deposit of RM50 when you register with us.

2nd-Hand-Books Sale

The sale is on for Semester 2 of 2007, starting on 19 July (Thursday) at 10am.

Location is at the corridor of Block 6, Level 1. (Near cafeteria and MUSA Lounge)

As usual, students who wish to sell their textbooks can come to us.

Visit our both anytime within our operating hours, which is 10am to 3pm. You are most welcomed!

Also, we offer book wrapping service. We will charge RM1.50 for each book wrapped.

Sale will end at the last day of CnS week.

Here's a brief introduction about Monash Business Club (MBC):

MBC has 3 departments or divisions, which are Activities Department, Public Relations Department and Monash Merchandise Shop Department. Each department is in charge of certain duties or specialisation.

The events and activities that we organise are Networking Party, Fundraising Sales, holiday trips, 2nd hand books sale, Members Appreciation Dinner and so on.

To know more about MBC, feel free to ask us during the book sale or recruitment drive. Membership fee is only RM5 per semester! Existing members, remember to renew your MBC membership. If not........ You will not be entitled for a certificate. :(

Pulau Perhentian trip -- Part 2

After lunch, it was leisure time. I stayed indoors all the time and chatted with my boyfriend, until dinner! Some still can’t get enough of the beach and swimming.

*god knows what was happening outside*

Everyone can’t wait to have barbeque dinner. The initial thought is that we are going to barbeque the food ourselves. It turned out to be that the kitchen crew barbeque it for us! LOL. Well, we can save our energy and enjoy the food! Barbeque was great. There were chicken, fish and succulent squid! Served with friend rice, which was not bad. However drinks are not sufficient. I was so thirsty after eating. It’s barbeque, dude.

Me and my friends spent the night playing cards in our room. That’s about all for the day. And we have to leave this island the next day.

We have to gather at 9.30am to check-out. However, some took quite some time to pack their luggage. We were supposed to board the boat at 10am. Still, we must not forget to take a group picture! So the ECs gathered everyone to take position. And at the sight of me the camera-girl, some of them gave me their cameras and asked me to take the picture for each of them. Hahaha…… I actually took some time to take the group picture (I took 4 shots), in the end, I did not help them take. Hahahaha…..

Island Heaven

I only get to look this hot in Pulau Perhentian

After the photo session, we all bid goodbye to Pulau Perhentian and bring all the sweet memories with us.

Most of us are very relieved that we finally can go back home, I bet many of us missed our own beds. Hahaha….. The bus was already waiting for us at the jetty by 11 o’clock. At the jetty, the bus driver told Laura that we have a flat tyre. The bus then traveled around Kuala Besut town to search for a workshop that caters to a bus. After around one and a half hour, the driver took us to a petrol kiosk as he needed to change the tyre. So we all have to get down and waited for the tyre to be changed. After that, we stopped at KFC Jertih to have lunch.

Finally, at 2pm, we continued our journey. It was a weekend, so there were a lot of cars, and the bus moved in a slow pace. I think the driver’s moving slow just in case any of the tyre got punctured again. Most of us slept in the bus. I woke up from my nap at 4.30pm, to my horror, I can still see the sea. We were still at Terengganu. Then until evening, there’s still no sight of direction towards the west coast. At this point, I felt that something was wrong. I just didn’t feel right (fully agreed by Laura).

By 7pm, I got even more worried as we were scheduled to reach college by 6. Then we just travel as fast as possible because there are many cars on the road. At 9pm, we stopped by at Kuantan to have dinner, after getting a bit lost. We were supposed to reach Kuantan by 7.30pm. I wasn’t in the mood to have a proper meal this late so I just munched on my digestive biscuits. I just wanted to go home.

After dinner, we continued our journey. Everyone slept in the bus. We reached Penhcala Link at 8am. And another half and hour, we finally reached Bandar Sunway, and back to college. We were like 14 hours behind schedule. All of us just went home right away.

Pulau Perhentian, what an adventure. I did not regret going at all. I had so much fun with my friends without parents around. It strengthened our friendship. We discovered more about each other. The experience is just wonderful. I had the time of my life.

Pulau Perhentian trip -- Part 1

A bunch of 40 of us joined the MBC Pulau Perhentian 3 day trip from 27 – 30 June. Majority arrived earlier than the said time of 9.30pm. I guess all of us are so exited about the trip. We boarded the bus at 10pm. It is bed time but some of us are happily chatting and playing in the bus. Some of the people play cards throughout the night. Can you believe it? Haha! I tried to sleep but the bus is very bumpy and it is very hard to fall asleep. The floor of the bus is vibrating but I do not want 9 hours of foot massage.

Next morning at 7am, we stopped by a malay coffee shop to have breakfast. Then we continued our journey to Kuala Besut jetty. Morning is very peaceful at Besut. There’s not much activities going on, unlike the life back at KL or Sunway. We waited for the speed boat to arrive. The boat ride is really kickass! The way to the island is against the current. The boat keeps jumping up when it hits the wave. It is so fun and thrilling for me. I hope others have fun too. I don’t know if there’s anyone experienced boat sickness. And when we reached the shore, everyone has got a new hairstyle, well blown hair.

The boat stopped right in front of our chalet, located at Teluk Dalam Beach of Pulau Perhentian Besar. And that was where everyone has their first touch of the land of Pulau Perhentian. The view is just great! The sand is white and fine. The sea water is so clear. And the weather is perfect! Then, Vic gathered everyone and we arranged for check-in. The chalet that we stayed is Everfresh Chalet. At first glance, it is a very nice place, small sized, very cozy. The downside (for us city kids) is there are many insects and animals around us. Some one found a big lizard in his room. One of the rooms even had a bat living in it! But of course, we manage to exchange it for another room. It was only about 11am, we just hang around that place and settle down.

Whoa.... Check this out!

Vic: "Hear ye.. Hear ye.."

This is exactly where we landed.

I was among the first few to taste the sea water of Pulau Perhentian. My friends coaxed me to go down to the beach. And I ended up soaking my clothes wet. We swam a bit in the cool sea. Then I get up to change into dry clothes. I waited for lunch while chatting with friends. Alas, lunch is served after 20 minutes delay. We had rice, chicken, mixed vegetables and iced Ribena. After lunch, it’s free time. Most of us went out to the sun to have fun with friends. At 5pm in the evening, we had a friendly match of beach volleyball. Some who stayed outdoors whole day got sun burnt a little.

Afternoon at Perhentian Island ~

After the match, we showered and waited for dinner. Everyone is so hungry that the food prepared is not enough, we had to request for a second round of cooking. For dinner we had tom yam sotong, rendang chicken and iced orange juice. There was not much activities going on after dinner as all of us need to catch up on some sleep.

Dinner.

The next morning, we gathered for breakfast at 8am. We had bread, sausages and fried meehoon and tea. While we were having breakfast, it rained! There was a slight drizzle and all of us are a little disappointed as it was our snorkeling trip that day! Everyone prayed hard enough that the rain stopped. Haha. At 9am, everyone couldn’t wait to get on the speed boat.

The ECs

High tide in the morning...

First, we are driven to Long Beach at Pulau Perhentian Kecil to have a “snorkeling practice session”. Within a blink of an eye, many had already swam far out into the sea, when it wasn’t the real snorkeling site yet. I guess they were too excited. Most of us are first-timers, including me. There are no instructors or anyone to teach us how to snorkel, so we teach each other instead! I saw that all are doing good except me -________-v Although I know how to swim but I am always afraid of water, so it took me a lot of guts to dip my face into the sea water. I was struggling on the gear and have to cope with my fear and at the same time trying my very best not to breathe with my nose. I choked on the sea water a few times. I looked at the rest of them, they were swimming so happily. Of course, I did not give up (and never will) so I kept attempting to look into the sea.

After warming up, we then depart to our first snorkeling site to see the corals! The corals are really pretty! But there are some dead corals too. Eeeww. Unfortunately I did not get to snorkel PROPERLY. I was so nervous as this is my first snorkeling experience!

Next, we are brought to see the sea turtle. There is one or two sea turtles on that beach. I did not go down the water this time. Felt tired from the forceful breathing using only my mouth. It was kind of funny because there are 40 people chasing one turtle. Hahaha. I wonder how the turtle feels actually.

After watching the turtle, we then go to see the baby shark. I was so excited about it so I went down to the water this time but I did not see any sharks! However, there are thousands of little colourful fishes in the sea! I felt a sudden gush of happiness flowing into my heart. I felt so happy that I did not realise the state that I was in and I started talking. I just can’t keep my mouth shut even under water. The fishes are so small like those you see in house aquariums. I was trying to catch a fish with my palms but I had too much movement and I scared the shit out of the fishes. All of a sudden the view is empty and blank. Then I turned around, “there you areeee……!” How childish.

Snorkelling was really fun. It is so enjoyable to swim with the fishes and to see the corals 3 metres away from you, in 3-dimension. LOL. We reached back to our chalet at 12.40pm. That day’s weather was perfect for snorkeling! Not sunny, not cloudy. Perfect! I’m sure no one gets any sun burn! Hehe...

Appreciation Dinner @ McD

We had an Appreciation Dinner at SS15 McDonald’s Drive Thru last night. All of the active members were invited to our Appreciation Night and they were served with FREE DINNER!!! *(^_^)* The dinner was supposed to start at 6pm, but majority of our fellow members follow the Malaysian timing... Which is at least half an hour later than the stated time!

Well, I reached there at 6.20pm. Amazingly, I was not too late, because I was the 7th person who arrived!! LOL!! As what I mentioned earlier, the rest of the people followed Malaysian timing!! *Sigh* I hope you guys will be punctual for the exams..

According to Jacqueline, McDonald’s staff had already arranged the burgers, french fries and Coke on the tables at 6pm SHARP!! So by the time I reached, the fries were cold and as hard as rock (u know batu??). Heheh kidding.. I’m such a fries-lover, can’t tahan eating cold fries mah. It’s my fault for coming late... Okay... Lesson learnt.

In the end, there were 30 plus members turned up for this special and memorable evening. We actually invited more than 60 members, but half of them couldn't make it. Too bad... =( Anyway, for the rest of us, we enjoyed our meals, hung around with friends, and chatted with each other. This is such a great opportunity to catch up with old mates or get to know new friends better. Of course, I was busy snapping pictures. And then others also started to take out their cameras and snap snap snap…

The climax and also the anti-climax of the night was when Andrew started the “yum seng” (toast) session. FIRSTLY, he thanked all the helpful members who made MBC a big success. Then, he thanked our beloved President Laura for leading the club well. *Thanks, Laura..* LASTLY, it ended with a toast session... for only 2-3 seconds.. *Sigh*... All of us were expecting something else. But he just turned and sat down all of a sudden. Really disappointing everybody... =p

Before all of us head home, we had a group picture session... *Everybody smile*!! Then, we bid each other goodbye at around 8pm... And yeah! There were a lot of left over food... Some of them tapau (take away) the burgers and fries home. Probably they will heat up the food before eat? Well, that's up to them...

Perhentian Island Trip!! The hottest event of the semester!!

Longing for a beach or island vacation?

Wanna have a break after your exams?

MBC wants to bring you to Pulau Perhentian! (referred as PP from here onwards)

PP is actually very famous for Scuba diving.. Although the beach is not as gorgeous as it seems from pictures, the water is definitely crystal clear! PP is a GREAT location for a hideaway. It’s not like packed with people and it’s peaceful and serene and tranquil… god knows what else to use to describe PP.

Also, PP have a lot of “ang mohs”. Most of the tourist are foreigners. So whoever that loves to see “ang mohs”, come to PP with us la! =p

Here goes the details of this trip:

PP is located at the north-eastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia. About 21 km off shores the remote town of Kuala Besut. Pulau Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhentian) and Perhentian Besar (Big Perhentian) comprise the Perhentian Island, aptly named after "henti"(stop) as fishermen from mainland Kelantan and Terengganu have, for centuries, stopped over at the island for a rest or to shelter during a major storm. These two lovely unspoiled island lie amidst exquisitely clear waters. A rocky virgin jungle provides hour of adventures for trekkers who may chance upon flying fox, long-tailed macaques and monitor lizards, while the underneath marine life shows off a splendid garden of coral.

The Everfresh Chalet is located at Teluk Dalam Beach. It is one of the budget chalet with fan and attached bathroom at Perhentian Besar. Steven Sea Sport (dive center) is located just in front of the chalet.

For the past two weeks (28th March ~ 6th April), we set up a FUNDRAISING BOOTH at the entrance of our cafeteria and sold a variety of food!! *Yummy yum Yum*

*Our MBC Crew... Get ready? Yes! Sir!!*

The food included:

Chocolate Marshmallow: MYR 1.50 per stick
3 pieces of cottony marshmallows joined in a sate stick and coated with melted chocolate *Saliva dripping... Slurp...*

*Oh noo... So tempting... Sue Lin... Shall we share?*

Herbal eggs “cha ye dan” : MYR 1.00 each
Hard boiled eggs simmered in Chinese herbs, which is more like Chinese tea. Our eggs sold out everyday!!! Demand was more than supply!!

Toast with strawberry jam/ butter/ kaya (Roti Bakar): MYR 1.00 per set
Sliced bread toasted in a mini heater. Then, spread with the jam.. *Yummy*!!

Nasi lemak/ Meehon: MYR1.50 per packet

The sambal wasn't too hot... It was just nice!! I miss it...

Curry puffs/ kuih: MYR1.00 for 2 pieces

I would say that it was a great success. Students were very supportive and their responses were encouraging. The crowd was big especially during brunch time and also rainy afternoon (Hehehe!! Students got stuck in cafeteria!). Besides, many students as well as staffs came for the irresistible Chocolate Marshmallow and herbal eggs during tea breaks!!

C&S week (or Clubs and Societies week, in case you go like ‘what?’)

Thanks to the PRs who made this attractive backdrop... Good Job!!

The much anticipated C&S week has finally arrived! It all happened during Week 4 of Monash’s academic calendar. However, it was only for 3 days, from 20 March to 22 March (Tuesday to Thursday). During that week, MBC, of course, set a booth at the foyer, alongside with other clubs (competitors *ahem*), to recruit newbies, AND TO LET OLD-IES RENEW MEMBERSHIP. =p

So what did MBC do at the booth?

Well, other than the usual member recruitment drive, we also sold our one-and-only MBC “Bill Them All” T-Shirt to students, especially MBC’s members. At the same time, we promoted our Networking Party and sold the tickets.

During our EARLIER RECRUITMENT DRIVE DURING WEEK 2,we recruited about 50 over new members. In total, we have 101 members in MBC if we did not miss out anyone and excluding committees. That would make MBC a “Dalmatians Club”. LOL. After the C&S week’s recruitment, we have another 5 new members coming in. Also, we managed to sell a number of t-shirts during that week.

Thanks to all who signed up as a member of MBC’s big family. And thanks to members who were on duty during the C&S week and those who have contributed to this activity. Please continue to support MBC and involve actively in our events. Hope to see all of you again in our future activities.

Wat the melon?

Wat the melon? That is the theme of MBC’s 2007 Networking Party. We opened our doors at 6.30pm. Then, the PR members and committees were there to welcome all who came to join the party. MUSA council members came as well, including the president Dahlia Martin. At first we were a bit worried that members do not turn up, but there were about 50 people came and some even came and paid on the spot! Some even joined as a member to get cheaper tickets. Haha! Anyway, majority of the members conformed to the theme. Most were wearing red shirts, some yellow and some green.

The party started as all members were invited to have dinner. We served pizzas (from Pizza Hut *wink*), home cooked spaghetti, cincau, and watermelon. The food was good as the pizzas were still hot. During meal time, members took the opportunity to socialise and mingle around (partly 'forced' by Yun Fook, knowing that one of the game later requires memorizing many names..haha). After an hour, Yun Fook, our Head of Activities Department gathered everyone to form a circle. Before that, Yun Fook introduced himself and all MBC’s committee. Then he got the ball rolling by asking everyone to take turn introducing themselves.

After that, members were divided into 2 groups to play the ice breaking game. The goal was that whoever was the fastest to call out the opponent’s name wins. Each team will have to send a representative and they were divided by a long red cloth. It was really exited as the members are trying to recognise (or to cheat?) their opponent’s legs, shoes, voice before the cloth is pulled down. Of course, the losers will have punishments. Losers will have to drink a cup of special made drinks --> 100 plus mixed with watermelon.

Then, moved on to the next game, members were divided into group of 6 to 7. It was some sort of a number game. Yun Fook picked a few numbers ranging from 1 to 100 and wrote it on a piece of paper (and kept secret). Then each team will have to pick numbers other than the number that Yun Fook has picked. If not, the balloon will burst and the team loses. Punishment is to eat wasabi spaghetti. There was one particular “lucky” team which lost 3 times in a row. This game was full of suspense and shocking.

Next, the balloon war. Teams had to tie balloons on their hands and legs. Then, they had to attack the “enemy’s queen” and protecting their own “queen” at the same time. It lasted quite long and still, there are no results. In the end, Yun Fook decided that the first team who loses will end this game. And this time, Andrew, the Head of MM Shop Department went to the extreme and decided that punishment is to eat CILI PADI. Those poor people who so coincidently won in the second game are the losers this time. They just chewed on the green powerful vegetable and the next thing is their faces turn red and tears are coming out from their eyes.

*Oh my god... The Cili Padi is sooooooo...... Green~~~~~*

The fun did not end there. Laura the president started the next game called “Simon Says”. Members were again sitting in a big circle and running around within the circle, giggling like little kids. Anyone with the criteria stated by the person in the middle must change seats. The lone person left without seats must stand in the middle to continue the game. The criteria called out are pretty much common, but some interesting things happened. Mid-way throught the game, some member's chair actually fell backwards! It seems that they ran too fast. Too excited I guess. Besides that, one of the chairs that Laura aimed for actually gave in when she sat on it! The iron bars of the chair must have been spoilt before that. (Or mayb she ate too much spaghetti LOL).

Soon, members got bored of "Simon Says". The game was switched to 7 Up. Numbers 1 to 7 are shouted in sequence and the cycle repeats. Those who got the number 4 and 7 must stand up and say "7 Up". Failing to do that, they get punished. Even those who stood up when they're not supposed to, get punished! After that, the game was made tougher by shouting numbers 1 to infinity, and those who got multiples of 7 must stand up and say "7 Up". After a few rounds, another new games was introduced.

The final game was the acting game. It's not really acting though. Members were divided into 4 groups. For each round, they must send a representative. Yun Fook mentioned the title, and the representatives must express the title, e.g. Spiderman, Mr. Bean, volleyball, etc. The one who is different from the others loses.

After all the games were over, all the members were exhausted from the shouting and screaming and also the excitement. Chilled soft drinks were made available to the members to quench their thirst. It is also the photo session. And we did not forget to take a group picture. =) Some members stayed back to socialize even more while drinking. Looks like the party is a success!

Those who went, I would like to thank you guys for coming. And thanks a lot to members who stayed back to help the committee to clean up the place. Your help is very much appreciated!

Silver Wings Project by MUSA

Hi there! I'm just helping the Monash University Student Association a.k.a. MUSA to promote their Silver Wings Project. The objective of this project is to reward students who are actively participating in extra-curricular or charitable activities. It is a point-based reward system, and points collected will expire when the semester is over. Only a brief introduction will be given here. For further details, please look for Yvonne Yee Wye Mun, MUSA's Welfare Officer or log on to MUSA's website.

There are 3 levels that can be achieved in the project.

White Wings: 150 pts
Gold Wings: 200 pts
Silver Wings: 300 pts

Besides that, prizes will be given out to students who collected the top 3 highest points.

1st prize: ipod video
2nd prize: ipod nano
3rd prize: ipod shuffle

The good news is, all participants will get a certificate!

Also, note that to participate in this project, a student needs 50 starter points and to fill in a form provided by MUSA. You can check out some examples of the points awarded for various activities.

Of course, MBC members can also earn points by participating in club activities. For example, whoever that duties at the recruitment booth during the CNS Week (20th-22nd March 2007) will get 2 points/hour!! Even better, members who attend the networking party will get 10 points!! Hi all…

Our club had successfully carried out our Secondhand Book Sale from Week 1 to Week 3. In case you are not sure about how our Book Sale works, here you go...

All students (YOU! You! and YoU!) who wish to get rid of their old textbooks can bring them along to our booth (Don’t worry.. We won’t help you to burn your textbooks =p). Then, our dedicated members will help you to SELL your textbooks (Of course handling fees will be charged accordingly). So, all you need to do is to sit back and pray that someone will purchase it. Hahaa!!

However, for those who wish to purchase secondhand books instead of the expensive new ones, you can visit our booth and hunt for the best deal. Well, we had collected hundreds of books for the past three weeks. Unfortunately, many of the outdated books were unsold... Sorry...

On the other hand, we are also having a recruitment drive (This activity is still going on until end of Week 4). Any interested students who haven’t sign up or renew your membership, please do so by registering yourself at our booth (at lower foyer) TODAY!! Registration fee is RM 5 only!!

On top of that, we are selling our Networking Party tickets as well. RM 8 for members and RM 10 for the Non-members. Well, you might ask why this is slightly more expensive compared to the previous semester. Okay, the reason why is, we are serving you a variety of food! MBC Annual General Meeting

Monash Business Club’s (MBC) annual general meeting was held on 13 March 2007. The venue for the meeting was C 2.1 and the approximate time that the meeting started was at 12.15 p.m. and it ended at around 12.55 p.m.

The meeting was started off by a welcoming speech from the President, Lim Xi Roa (Laura). Laura introduced herself, the General Secretary (Jakson Khung), the Treasurer (Tan Shi Yan) and her assistant (Ng Wai Yin) and welcomed all new members of the club who were present. The president mentioned the availability of 3 empty posts, which were the Vice president, the Assistant Public Relations (PR) Department and the Webmaster posts. It was decided by MBC that the posts will be filled by voting for the respective candidates. The candidates were as below:

Followed by Laura’s speech, the candidates for Asst Head of PR Dpt each gave an introduction speech.

As one of the candidates for the Vice president had not arrived, the Head of PR, Lim Sue Lin carried on with an introduction of the PR department. After Sue Lin’s speech, she asked the PR members to stay back for a while after the general meeting.

Subsequently, the head of MBC’s Activities Department, Tan Yun Fook, stepped up to present an introduction of his department. Afterwards, The MM shop department head, Liew Li Han (Andrew), also gave a brief introduction to his department. Next, MBC’s treasurer, Tan Shi Yan, presented MBC’s current account to the members.

While papers are passed down for votes, the candidates for Vice President were asked to introduce themselves. Meanwhile, Foong Mei Yin (stand-in webmaster) introduced to the members MBC’s very own blog site, www.monashbusinessclub.blogspot.com.

Finally, the votes for the empty posts were in. Foong Mei Yin won the VP post by 23 votes to Shahrul’s 11 votes. As for the Asst Head of PR Dpt, Nataline Tan came away as the new assistant as she brought in 18 votes. Cherina had 8 votes while Hoh Jin Ling had 5.

The meeting ended at 12.55 p.m.

how're the holidays treating you all? mine's been cold.. a wintery christmassy season up here in calgary, canada. quite different from the dreary malaysian weather. i hear it's been consistently raining back home and make sure you take care on those slippery roads aight?

got a mail from the monash management and it goes a lil something like this:

"Monash Malaysia Open day will be held on 16 December 2006, from 10-5pm and the management was wondering whether MBC will be able to set up a booth to sell Monash merchandises. Please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation."

i've referred the booth matter to our activities, public relations, and mmshop heads. hopefully we'll be able to gather those who are free (some of you have jobs so this activity isn't mandatory!) to generate some holiday revenue for the club! there are also some perks for those who come to help out.. heheh.. ;p

a spot of tugging

the evening came with large ominuos rain clouds hovering overhead, threatening to postphone the event for yet another day.

still, the calm weather prevailed and although the monash sports carnival was to have ended the previous week, we participated in its final event - tug of war.

there was a total of.. THREE teams participating in this event and we had to go through two rounds to clinch the title of "tug of war champions".

the other teams were the student association of monash and erm.. a bunch of friends calling themselves the rojak team or something.

what can mbc do against such opponents but to win. and fast.

musa photographer temme lee exclaims, "why did you guys have to win so fast? it was over in just 4 seconds and all i could take was a photograph or two!".

the whistle sounded and we started tugging. the strategy was to place our biggest and baddest man (sesshy) at the anchor position (the back) and tug our hearts out to the cries of our president, "kill them all! kill them aaalllll!!"

the field was a little mucky due to the rainy season and those who faced us soon found themselves sliding over the soggy ground. i contrived to remain spotless as i had to fetch qianyi from the ktm station afterwards.

..was the theme for this semester's networking party - hosted by the monash business club and attended by its members, their friends, representatives from monash university's student association, and others. the theme was meant to extend to dressing, and even accesories.

the evening started off with the activities crew leading us into our first game, which was an icebreaking session between party-goers. it involved a sheet of paper with boxes. in each box there is a requirement. if a friend meets that requirement, you get him/her to sign the box and once you get a row [or was it two?] you win a prize. some of the requirements were: can do 20 push-ups, can down 2 cans of coke, and can do a dirty dance.

after dinner, which comprised of the old favourite [same with last semester] nasi lemak plus curried chicken and other condiments, everyone settled down to listen to a few instructions on the next game. after some lengthy preparations and such, the game was to be a form of charades. group members guessed what they thought sesshy was acting out. or something. haha. maybe you should see for yourself:

the next game required a little more physical exertion. groups were spread out about the room. on one side, members were blindfolded and spun around a few times for good measure. on the other side, members were sat down on a chair, blindfolded, and what's worse.. they got their wrists tied together. tables and chairs were scattered between the two ends. and the game began..

needless to say we chose the right man as musa president. so, erm.. gungho.

next, we had a few rounds of best dressed [you dressed all flowery. guys. you sure deserve somethin] pageant thing. and after that, the groups all showed their creative side as they were to present a sketch on the spot.

the laughter from presenting the sketches basically summed up the night's events - a bunch of people, brought together under the red and white of mbc, doing something crazy and having a good time.

congrats to the various groups who participated whole-heartedly and went through the night with us. a big THANK YOU to all who came and made the party alive and happening - it wouldn't be the same without you. XD

that's right! for those of you who haven't realised yet, this week is the club's ice cream sales week! the sale of nestle ice cream has already started since yesterday and is scheduled to continue all the way till the end of the week! the ice cream booth will be set up and ready for business from around 10am till 3pm! stop by, bring your friends, and come out and support us by getting a cone or two!

here are the pictures of the mbc booth which was set up during the first 2 weeks of this semester. since the 1st day itself, all the way till the end of musa's clubs and societies week, members were stationed at the booth during peak hours to handle the receiving and sale of books, book wrapping, member registration, and networking party registration. it all ended with a great big bang when mbc, for the second time this year, won the best booth award.

best booth award episode 2

the booths were judged based on how they looked of course. but other than that, my guess is the judging had to do with how the booth was presented to the general public. whether the people at the booth were helpful in explaining what the club does.. that sort of thing.

during the first few weeks of every semester, mbc holds the secondhand book sale at the booth which draws big crowds who loiter around and scour through stacks of books. this creates, what i call, the 'happening' effect - when the club's activities seem to generate alot of interest from the student body.

but anyway, the judging of this semester's best booth award was done last friday - the final day of musa's clubs and societies week. and mbc won! again!

many thanks to those who came and helped out. by carrying books from the mmshop, setting up and taking down the booth, handling large amounts of transactions in the form of books received and books sold, handling the accounts, explaining the club's activities to would-be members, and by just being there to lend a hand - the award really belongs to you guys.

this is just a notification post to let you guys know the monash business club booth is open! it's located in the foyer, down the stairs from the financial counter and has been up since the first day of the semester. the booth will be open for about the next 3 weeks or so but it depends lah. if the activity and pr departments get tired of waiting for people to buy second hand books, they might close it up.

yes, call your friends, call your tutemates, call people from the cafeteria, call anyone who'd be interested in making money, making friends, and having fun, to sign up at the registration side of the booth. for those who're looking for secondhand books, the other side of the booth has mounds of secondhand books which are mostly business in nature. i've personally seen some science books in there. engineering and communications students, you may try and see lah.

here's what you can do:

if you want to join the club
step 1: congratulate yourself for choosing to invest your parent's hard earned money on a cause that's as worthwhile as this. instead of spending it on movies, handphone credit, or dota.

step 2: go to the booth.

step 3: ask someone at the booth on how to register yourself as a member.

step 4: register yourself as a member to receive various benefits such as:

i. discounts if you buy a used book from the booth
ii. discounts if you attend the networking party, the club trip, or other club related activities.

if you want to sell a used text book
step 1: bring your used text book to the booth.

step 2: hand it to the people behind the mound of books at the booth.

step 3: wait for them to process your transaction.

step 4: receive a receipt.

step 5: about 2 weeks later, produce your receipt at the mmshop to either:

a) get back your book if it hasn't been sold
b) get your cash if your book's been sold

if you want to buy a used text book
step 1: rummage around said mound of books.

step 2: haggling is futile. prices stated are final.

step 3: thank you for doing business with us :)

monday was the first day of orientation for the second semester of 2006. we didn't go for that one though. the one we went for was on tuesday which was the orientation day for the business and i.t. faculty. getting there in the late morning, meiyin photocopied some flyers and we gave them out after the new students finished their games in the multipurpose room, next to the student lounge.

the flyers were well received suprisingly. i think it's because of the general blurness new students have after undergoing brutal orientation, which led them to stagger out of the lounge not knowing where to go. and THAT's where we hit them! "here you go/here's a flyer for you/hey check this out" was all we had to say for them to take a flyer. let's hope they did look at them though. but not to worry. our semesterly second hand book sale booth will be up soon enough. so hang tight and watch this space!

appreciation dinner

so we booked about 7 tables at nando's chicken place in sunway pyramid. with about 5 - 10 to a table, the turnup totaled to about 70 people. dinner started soon enough after the arrival of the mbc bigwigs, namely the president and her cohorts. the menu went something like this:

- chicken
- fries
- potato wedges
- salad
- some other kind of salad
- coleslaw
- soup
- drinks
- garlicy bread

personally, i'd choose nando's over kenny roger's anytime. and as you can see, that was quite a braw deal for just helping out. i prefer the tangy zest of the peri peri to the savoury black pepper mushroom sauce. no matter how much or little everyone contributed, as long as the department heads remembered your name and/or face they'd invite you to this one night only event.

sherleen hit a glass with cutlery to halt our ravenous gorging and as soon as we made sure our food was out of the reach of the person next to us, we warily looked up.

"thank you for your help"

"can we get back to eating?"

"everybody go mbccccccccccccc!"

"okay okay fine, mbc!"

"can the committee stay back after dinner for a short meeting?"

"no we can't"

"thank you!" *grin*

the meeting mainly involved thanking everyone and discussing what to do next semester to live up to our fame. target: club of the year award!

It was six a.m. plus... the moon was still visibly clear...
but the sun was rising...
and rising........

hehe, i think only one quarter of the islanders were awake till this hour.

soon enough it was time for breakfast...

got... toast bread, strawberry jam, butter, fried noodles, some chinese nasi pulut, roti canai, curry, century egg porridge and lotsa yau char kwayyyyyy....

so much food... that's most probably why most of us felt like a boar when we got back from redang... like perpetually looking for food/eating in hugeee amounts.

oh wells,

not long after... we had to check out at ten thirty a.m. i think...

while waiting for the boat in the cafeteria...

if u ever wondered how our motto, "BILL THEM ALL" came about...

it was actually inspired by the original motto, "KILL THEM ALL"..........

yes, and enrico's very proud of it.

but we... we are very proud of the resort we stayed at...

Oh well, the boat arrived ... and we had to leave...

but at least the food was so-so. lemme see, the chilli sauce was like grape jam colour... and fried chicken were not big enough sizes ... root beers was fine... hot dog was fine... but they didn't have waffles... why...

well, at least it was filling, coz after that meal... everyone really kong-ed out. like i didnt even know the bus stopped.

oh yeah and after the makan at anw's... we went outside to digest ourselves...

Actually the outlet is like located at the seaside... an ok ok kind, not like filled with resorts .. n stuffs... but the sand is cleannnnn.. no pampers or pads or coke cans lying around... hence... it is worth another picture? hehe.

and in the bus ... after almost everyone woke up from their kong-ed out session... we all played games... half the bus was like ... "big fish smal fish..."... then penalty drink water from this hugeee bottle... don't know how many gallons of water they drank. the other half of the bus was like... playing zoom block and some animal games... which went like "dog dog snake snake" n etc... akakaka.

guess we tried maximizing the last hour/ half an hour left together on a trip? keke. emo-ish.

but it's true... not much longer... we reached the foyer... of our not forgotten campus. joked a little, sighed a little, exchanged contacts... n said goodbye... for then.

but met back online later on for sure... :P

to sum it all, the MBC PULAU REDANG 2006 TRIP WAS A BLASTTTTTTTTTT...

yes... i can hear echoes of the other thirty nine islanders agreeing to me. akakaka.

Don't just echo... speak up and comment lar. hehe.

Cause, toegther... all of us made presence in Pulau Redang ...

from fifteenth to eighteenth july... those were the days... we'll always treasure.

remember the ice cream sales we had a couple of weeks back? well, here are the fruits of our labour! this is what we've been bugging people to buy ice cream for, what we've been pushing the fridges to the cafeteria and back for, and what we've been disturbing the peace with ringing the ice cream bell incessantly for.

last saturday afternoon (6th of may 06) was sweltering. but the sun wasn't a deterrent enough to stop us from what we've set out to do - deliver monetary help, food, and drink supplies to an orphanage located somewhere around the back of summit usj. so, meeting first at the campus, we hopped into (MY!) a few member's cars filled with stuff like packets of rice, noodles, bottled drinks and soon enough found ourselves at the gate of a corner lot terrace house.

this wasn't any ordinary terrace house. it was filled with 20 or so little kids, a couple of adult guardians, and about 30 ladies in white. they brought with them containers full of food, pots filled with soupy broth (brothy soup?), trays of fried finger food and packets of gifts for the kids. they were from tupperware and they were there to entertain. by golly they did. prancing around together with the kids, their profuse offers of extra fried mee and bean broth brought excuses out of us. "oh we had lunch already". resistance was futile. we had 2nd lunch. or for some of us, 3rd.

so anyway, while the tupperware ladies were wrapping up their visit with a little performance from the kids, we unloaded rm500's worth of food, and drinks, and.. oil.. from rachel's car. she was actually worried about leaving the stuff in the car as you know.. you never know in these kinda neighbourhoods these days. a Wandering Bunch Of Foreigners (WBOF) might decide to break a window and get some packets of rice to feed their kids. here's a tip WBOF, see that steel gate in the background? we malaysians use pieces of gate to sell and get $$$. how to get pieces of the gate? err..

anyway. we got to know the kids soon enough. they introduced themselves and shook our hands and leaned over. not knowing what to do, i pat the little guy on the head.

so after singing some songs accompanied by guitar, namely rasa sayang and do a deer, we gathered around to play mbc's traditional game of 'blow wind blow'. in actual fact, the kids knew how to play already! we suspect it must have been from the many groups who come to visit every now and then.

deciding to let the kids off the hook and give them some rest, ahah.. nah. we guessed they must've been pooped after two groups visiting them in one afternoon. so everybody gathered around for one last group picture.

leaving behind some goodies, a little money, and another memory of another visiting group, we left compassion home and the kids two and a half hours after we first arrived. how our little trip might change their lives, i'm not sure. i'm not sure of most things anyway. but there's hope. i hope they remembered, or at least heard, what some guitar dude advised earlier on in the visit - "hi! we're from monash university. it's not too far from here. if you study hard enough, you can study in a university too!"

i hope i remember his advice too.

checked-in, Day 1 of Redang !

Right, so we jumped off the boat… and checked-in. We stayed in three’s in various blocks of D, E, F… + etc.

The resort was cosy and comfy, no complains from me at least. It really feels like home when staying at Redang Beach Resort. That's what i like about it... not too classy, just nice a resort.

It was 11.00 p.m. plus… and lunch was at 1 p.m. We were starvinggg……………..

Finally lunch was served, and everyone was happy and gay. Wahaha. Just jk. :)

Shortly after that… there was an announcement …

“music blaring - - - bla bla bla --- it’s snorkelling time - - - bla bla bla - - - music blaring”.

So we gathered around … the Snorkelling Centre for a short briefing.

And this is our Guru of Snorkelling.

Some interesting things that he mentioned…

First…
“Guru : Don’t worry… I wash the mouth piece with acid already.
Student: HURHHHH ??? ACID… ???
Guru : No lah… soappp… hehehe.”

Second…
“Guru: Over there you can see baby sharks, fishes, and and and and.
Student: What’s and and and and?
Guru: And and and and means bla bla bla bla larrr…

Student:…. Sweat….”

Once our snorkelling tuition was done, we left for our very first snorkelling trip.

Can you believe i thought those jelly fishes was mucus? Hahaha. Must watch the discovery channel more often. I'm sure most of the other 39's knew it was jelly fish... cause most of them went up the boat early enough.

When we got back to the resort… it was tea-time! They really feed us well back at the resort.

Tee-hee.

Next up, was the Treasure Hunt.

It was quite funny… cause one of the requirements was to make a cup of hot tea or milo. Yen yoong first ran to the cafeteria to make the tea… then dona ran in as well. And they were racing against each other to make the tea. When they were done… they ran around to look for their respective groups… only to find out… they were from the same group!!! Rofl.

At 6.00 p.m. , the cut-off time… we calculated the scores… AND … the results…

ding-a-ling! for Redang too?

If you happen to pass by the ice cream booth often enough, you would have heard the ding-a-ling’s for ice creams for sure… but did you hear the one for Redang? Hehe. There were indeed a few members who very well portrayed their pasar malam marketing skills by ringing the bells and shouting “REDANG, REDANG, REDANG, 3 days 2 nights, RM300 for members, RM315 non-members, 3 snorkelling trips, all meals included………….”.

Well, thanks to their greatest effort, the booth did attract quite a number of people. The countdown of seats left were going off pretty fast… summing up the final happening bunch of 40 who were going to Redang as soon as the mid-sem break commences!

The night of 15th April finally came… the foyer was filled with island-goers all excited n ready to have funnnnnnnn !!! Everyone climbed in the bus as soon as it arrived… we had to wait for Indon mafias : enrico, indra, reza + marlene for a bit. But as soon as they hopped on, the bus driver shot off to Kuala Terengganu.

K lar, he didn’t actually shoot off.. he took off. And he was a very safe driver. Safe enough for us to take pictures and try to doze off to sleep.

We stopped a couple of times before reaching the Jetty… but everyone looked abit zombie-ish. So no pictures till breakfast time. We stopped at some cina hawker at 6.30 a.m. which plays eery chinese orchestra music. But served quite a variety of food… which was pretty cheap as well.

The journey continued n we reached the jetty. It was drizzling… but there was a rainbow in the sky. Definitely a sign of a good trip ahead!

The boat wasn’t punctual. Thankfully there was a decent funny toilet around. If not, burst lar.

When the boat came… priority was given to onions, eggs + chicken wings first.

But finally…. We got on the boat and were on our way to Redang… our paradise.

As we came close… the water was crystal blue… just beautiful...

And we all just couldn’t wait to get out of that BOAT!!!

ding-a-ling!

most of you either took part in it or stopped by for a cone or two: mbc's charity drive ice cream sale! we got nestle to come over in their big blue truck to supply us with two freezers, ice cream scoops, and tubs and tubs of ice cream! they came in flavours like chocolate ripple (best seller), mixed berries, yummy raisin, pistachio, and the like.

from the 3rd to the 7th of april, we sold ice cream (1 scoop rm 1.50, 2 scoops rm 2) and floats (rm 2 a cup) to students, lecturers, administrative staff and practically anyone who heard the call of the ice cream bell. yes, they managed to get a bell somehow and the high pitched peals helped to bring in the customers though some at the foyer found it abit noisy - they were studying. well here's three words for ya: li-bra-ry.

every morning sleepy 'just woke up' cafeteria goers were entertained by the freezers being pushed from the cafeteria to the foyer and every evening sleepy 'after class' cafeteria goers were entertained by the same pushing of freezers. sunway cleaners stood aside in awe at the mess we were making - everytime we shook toppings for the ice cream (chocolate rice, coloured rice, nuts) bits of them were sprinkled all over the place.

but nonetheless, what with all the greasy fingers, nuts stuck to your shoes, and yells of 'ice cream!', the club managed to raise a grand total of rm1k to be donated in a small ceremony (coming soon). a big thank you to all who came and helped especially the activities members and not forgetting those pr members who lent a hand when the orders became too numerous to handle.

the car wash fundraiser

ello everyone! it's me again bringing you coverage of the previous car wash fundraising event! we've been planning it for a long time already. for about two days. and together with help from students of the one academy, who designed and produced posters and sandwich boards advertising the event, we managed to wash about 30 cars over the span of three days! soo.. that's rm10 per car, we get rm5, they get rm5, minus a couple of bucks for the soap, sponges, etc. well that's an okay sum i guess. for such hard work.

sherleen told me to be there by 8 that monday morning. waking up at 7.30 to gloomy skies and a light drizzle, i had bad feelings about the whole enterprise. but you know, duty calls. and on the way pass the ldp toll, which was jammed as usual, i received a call from the friendly one academy correspondent asking me where i was and when i would be there and he cheerfully informed me that they've been there since 7.30.

i jovially replied i'd be there soon. but oh, the rest of the days were fine. apart from slight drizzles, which didn't do much to hamper customers with dirty cars, there were of course those excuses some gave when we asked if we could wash their car for rm10. some of them went, "i have an indonesian maid at home". i'm like, "dude i'm an indonesian student. so can i wash your car?".

others went, "oh i just washed my car". i wanted to remind them that lying is a sin, after noticing dust, leaves, and dried bird poop on their cars. i mean why don't you just tell me that you don't want your car to be washed? instead of saying you've washed it already? that's like telling a lottery ticket seller that you've just won the lottery and you don't need to buy anymore tickets.

all in all it was exhausting work as we had to borrow trolleys from the reluctant facilities people and ferry pails of soap and water into the carpark to wash staff cars as far as the side gate. it's hard to hold a carwash when the girls who are helping out refuse to dress more obscenely. even after the guys beg them to do so. for the sake of business of course.

Campus Trivia!

Did you know there's a red kancil parked in the campus parking almost everyday? It's near the side gate and has the number plate WET (some numbers). We washed it during carwash event, day one.

since it's been about two weeks since the party, some have questioned my ability to write about it. indeed some have even gone so far as to claim i can hardly remember a thing about it (other than having alot of sweet drinks). well here's my retort: neither can you.

so let us together reminiscence about the time when a group of mbcians got together to plan for the party of the sem, an event steeped in tradition and passed down from generation to generation since the 90s, mbc's networking party.

it isn't just a walk in the foyer. dinner needs to be ordered and transported from restaurant to campus, games need to be constructed (synchronizing the amazing race was a headache!), prizes need to be bought and wrapped, people need to be told what to do and when to do it, and a whole lot of other stuff like inviting friends and doing ticketing all contributed to making the party a success.

all the planning doesn't compare to the actual event though. that's when things tend to happen a little out of the plan. would you believe, the first game was unplanned? some of you may have recognized that game we played during the pangkor trip last year - blow wind, blow. well it made a comeback because all you guys were clustered up and we needed to mix things up a little see?

oh yes! congrats to those who won during the lucky draw! just for those who are wondering, the prizes were an mbc 'bill them all' t-shirt, a discount for the redang trip, and some monash merchandise from the shop! heheh, like highlighters, keychains, those kinda stuff.

well soon after, that balloon stomping game ensued. note to self: games like these need boundaries! some groups fled the scene, balloons bobbing at ankles, and hid behind the scenery. but nevermind, it got you guys stretched and all geared up for the following game - running necessary - the amazing race.

i didn't know we had to pass the straws mouth to mouth. i thought it was just feeding the gooey stuff in the straws to your partner by hand! well in any case it proves that parties like these help promote camaraderie among members. hohoho, peace and goodwill to all mankind!

after a little drink of mixed vegejuice, pepsi tarik, some kind of santan, and limejuice concentrate, the groups got their prizes and everyone posed for pictures. yes, i'm running out of things to say. oh but don't forget it was the committee who ended up having a whole bottle of limejuice concentrate. no water added. and yours truly attempted (bleh) to finish it all off. kids, don't try this at home. or anywhere else for that matter.

and there it is - monash business club's networking party of sem 1, 2006! oh the people there are the committee i think. well, some of them anyway. for those who participated thank you for making history with us, as part of the 90+ crowd who came, being the reddest, most tiring networking party ever!

general meeting

phew, streamyx is back on. my internet's been abit choppy these past few days. anyhow, here's the long awaited general meeting post!

monash business club's general meeting of semester 1 2006 started with true malaysian fashion - it began about twenty minutes after the allotted time. but i'm sure your tutorials / lectures / graduation ceremonies have not begun on time as well due to the universal truth - speakers are deep sleepers.

that's right. so far i've not encountered any speakers that could leap out of their dusty rest and immediately sound proper. they usually need to be coaxed by the sound system guys and after emitting a few groans and high pitch squeaks, they bashfully address the crowd with too much bass. or treble. or echo. or the billion other reasons sound system guys use.

not that i have anything against sunway's grey-blue adorned maintenance guys. they did everything in their power to help us start on time, short of buying a newer better sound system lah. still, we managed to end the meeting on time at 1.

but i'm getting ahead of myself. the turnout that day was incredible. the ones and twos who came to the booth to register all added up to form the packed lecture theater 2 that tuesday afternoon. some powerpoint presentations ensued featuring our recent 'best booth' award and the upcoming trip to redang.

next up were the various department spokesperson(s) - laura and meiyin representing public relations (selling tickets, getting new members, face of mbc), andrew representing mmshop (mmshop map available in previous post, sells merchandise like reload cards, shirts, stationery, etc), jakson and jorene and the reluctant zz representing activities (organize and run events, book sales, networking party, trip), chin yen and stephen representing the editorial (publish newsletters and magazines), and of course

your friendly neighbourhood blogger (complains why mbc is so inefficient and why can't other clubs catch up). i'm still looking for people who are able to use (and already have) microsoft frontpage and/or java. or also if you're interested in doing what i'm doing (the blog la duh) drop a line here and we'll be in touch. =)

so for all the new members who joined and got a bad impression of the club because we started our general meeting late, fret not. this is the best mistake you've ever made. for now lah. you still gonna get married right. ha see..

for the uninformed, or for those who didn't walk into the foyer at all for the past week, monash's club and societies week was held on tuesday and wednesday. i think. the monash business club was there all the while lah.

we've been there for the past two weeks receiving and selling second hand books (includes a small fee of rm5 for book handling), offering book wrapping services (rm1.50 per book), taking in new members at rm9.90 a year (rm0.10 processing fee), and selling tickets to the networking party (rm 8 non-member rm 6 member)! we're still gonna be there this week to sell said tickets, and maybe extend the recruitment drive. but that's up to laura i guess.

come one and all! party tickets purchased so far: 50!

get your party tickets from the booth in the foyer (or near the financial counter)! also, come for the general meeting on tuesday to find out more about the departments you've joined and meet your department heads!

oh and if you've sold second hand books through the booth, come by the mmshop anytime these two weeks (13th - 24th march) to collect your money! or if your book hasn't been sold, collect your old books lah! and notes. heaps of them are clogging up the mmshop and getting in the way of the spring cleaners.

so during the clubs and societies week, they had this competition going on see? best booth and what not. and i must admit there were some tough competition. costa (movie making communications faculty club thing) had a projector and were showing off their advertisements and short clips they filmed. the biotech club taped squiggly white things on the floor throughout the foyer. a publicity gimmick i guess. hah! a member of theirs must have taken marketing as an elective.

but i guess the clubs weren't just judged based on how big their booths were. or how busy it looked. or how many new members they had registered. because we would have won outright. no, they were also judged on.. i dunno, having a club t-shirt?

or was it how much profit we made?

it was the day of the storm. the winds swept in rainwater and leaves, wetting the whole foyer. the trees around sunway and subang, and a couple of booths, fell against the torrential downpour. it was then that the results announced the culmination of two weeks of hard work. the setting up and pulling down of the booth, the heaps and heaps of books that had to be carried to and from the mmshop, the promoting, the sales, the haranguing. to use the words of president wee, "WE WOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN"

have you ever noticed how, as residents in a nation whose piracy rate is among the highest in the world, we react to original cd and book prices? having worked part-time at a musicbookstore during last summer break, the reaction is nothing short of amusing. for the first two customers lah. after that i begged them to "purchase! don't time waste!"

you quote the price, then we add rm5 for "handling fees"

haha! just a little catchphrase there. our little innovation from the line "kill them all" to of course, "bill them all", is drawing some attention. for the wrong reasons. let's just say here that it is not a good time to be wearing the shirt and being a member of the female gender. you'd be trying to explain the benefits of joining the club while admitting that yes, upon closer inspection, the words are not dead center.

why don't we add another buck for "entertainment fees"?

yes, i painted my shirt. it took me around an hour or so. what you have to do is spread a generous layer of white in a front and back motion so as to make it creamy (but not too much until it froths) and bake it under the toilet hand dryer set at a temperature of 120 degrees for about 5 - 10 minutes. depends on the humidity of the restroom you chose. serves 1 shirt wearer who's not too particular about having cracks in the words.

no danny, use the black pen. the black pen!

working at the booth, we all have to be a little less particular about things. because after two to three days of being pulled down and put up again, the board and all the things on it turn into flimsy pulp. the styrofoam words, pictures, and text bearing mahjong papers lose their ability to stay up. but with a little touch up from meiyin and her people, the board should stay up fine throughout the whole of next week.

laura don't just promote your own department lah!

next week is when the 'clubs and societies' week begins. hopefully people would be more used to the book prices by then. hopefully there'd be no more "WOW! it's that much?!" and "is this the lowest price? can i get it cheaper?". it's a second hand book honey, it's already cheaper than the original. and we're running a business here, not a charity. MBC.. not MCC.

hmm.. which dept has the least work?

coming soon to a foyer near you, the monash business club membership drive cum 2nd hand book sale! it'll be starting from the 27th, which is when uni starts lah, to the erm 10th i think. yeah. and for those of you who might be new and are wondering where the foyer is, here's a helpful guide prepared by your seniors who have been around for 2 to 3 years: we have no idea either.

seriously, where in the campus does the foyer begin? and where does it end? and can anyone point out the location of the mystical student concourse that shifts its location with the sands of time? back when i was in cimp, i heard the concourse was that strip of concrete connecting the then called 'foyer' with the then called 'cafeteria'. now they have 'new age' names like 'discussion area' and 'food court'.

for those of you who didn't know, monday, the 20th of february, was orientation day for the 1st monashian intake of 2006! the monash business club was there bright and early, at 11, to prepare colourful flyers and cheerful faces to meet and greet the newcomers. of course we went in during the lunch break! what could be more strategic than going in when people are holding plates and cups and can't run away fast enough! haha kidding.

really, mbc thanks all of those who availed themselves to help arrange and distribute flyers. if it were not for you, we would have to place them in one of those box things with the words 'please take one'. and they would be distributed more efficiently that way.

haha. but really. what matters is that the students get greeted and informed about the club. what matters is the human touch. the "hello how are you" and the "we do lots of stuff" and the "can i have your number?". less efficient, but loads more effective.

ps. spread the word! the blog lives through the mouths of the people!

day three

while being able to bring home memories and momentos, the trip had to end sometime. there would always be a last time for everything though.

7.05 am - sunrise in pangkor

like the last breath of seabreeze, the last view of the ocean and its skies, the last fly infested meal, the last stroking of the kittens, the last feel of the moist morning sand between your toes, the last ringing note from the guitar, the last walk to the pekan, the last time you had to squabble with others for use of the bathroom, the last game of mafia..

12.30 pm - i'm eating here, go take someone else lah!

still, it won't be the last time for some things. it won't be the last time we have meals together as a club, it won't be the last time we play card games together as a club, and it's definitely not the last time mbc is going somewhere together on a trip. oh yeah. and it's also definitely not the last time mafia is updated. so come to the monash merchandise (mm) shop sometime (beside the student lounge) and catch up with the folks you met at the trip, and get to know others who couldn't make it, as well as old timers who keep coming back for mbc's activities.

what can i say? it's something in a club that draws you back. be it slogging away at the book wrapping counter, persuading passerbys to purchase a packet of cookies or some donuts, or even enjoying yourself with the games prepared every networking party.

day two

the next day dawned nice and bright. a couple of guys awoke to nasi lemak a la flies and a little morning mafia. occupied with food, drink, and games, it took the guys only about 2 or so hours to realise that they were in fact girls in the trip. seems that they decided to sleep in, so being the gentlemen that they are the guys left them alone to their late morning snooze. besides, there were mafias to be caught.

sooner or later though, everyone had to get up for island hopping and snorkelling. one of the highlights of the trip.

once we had our fill of salt water, beach rock climbing, and for some of us, actually seeing fishes, we headed back all together for lunch and a little games after that. and of course, a little male bonding with the ultimate male game that doesn't require any gadgetry - mafia.

4.30 pm - the game is now in session. the unwritten rule is
to get rid of the noisiest people. >.O

and presenting our most artistic pictures yet (due to the waves and the setting sun i guess), a few of us dared to try the banana boat and a little kayaking to coral island and beyond.

washing up after a long salty sandy day, we were met with abrar and his dudes for a little barbequeing, another highlight of the trip. with sand between our toes and the roaring rising tide behind us, we enjoyed fresh crabs, clams, and roasted fish. i must say the food was good, the ambience superb.

with updated versions of mafia, the violence junkies stayed up practically the whole night killing, spying, healing, arguing, accusing, and who can forget, silencing.

10.00 pm - a little late for dinner, but abrar cooked up a storm!

day one

the sun was still hidden beyond the horizon when 40 students from various courses convened at the sunway foyer to board the bus that would take them all the way to lumut.

8.00 am - catching up on sleep

the rain started around the time we left selangor and didn't let up. upon arrival at the lumut jetty, we were besieged by ferry people looking for passengers. zz remained adamant that we already booked a ferry. soon after some bald guy brought us to our means of getting across the sea to pangkor.

our arrival on pangkor was heralded by clear skies and breezy winds. we were ushered into little pink vans, 10 to a van.

12.45 pm - pink vans around pangkor

soon, after traversing windy roads slick from the downpour, we arrived at pangkor rimba camp where we were to live for the next 3 days and 2 nights. we soon discovered the extent of our accomodations. there were 23 girls, 17 guys, and 3 dorms. i'm not sure how this happened but it turned out to be 12 girls, 11 girls, and 17 guys to a dorm each. one dorm had one bathroom.that's it.

one bathroom contained a shower head, basin, and a toilet of the squattable kind. so imagine 17 guys, all sandy and sweaty after a day at the beach.. coming back to their dorm which has one bathroom.. and finding out that it's occupied. by a girl. after grimly mulling over this for awhile, we had some food and games.

2.30 pm - blow whaaat??

athalia and liz, our games people, gave us a bunch of straws and orders to build a tall thing. we were divided into groups and came up with names like putu mayam, sleep deprived, alpha-q, and alpha-q back.

3.00 pm - straw towers

after that session of team building, we wandered about. some of us got into mischief with a tyre swing by the beach. some played volleyball, some captainball.

4.30 pm - how to stay young:
take one tyre, two girls, and a generous dash of scream

6.00 pm - ganas enough for you??

after some physical exercise (studying for exams is a good way for stress buildup and weight gain) some headed off to a place with shops down the road, or what we fondly called the 'pekan'.

7.00 pm - curry seafood stew! *drool*

after a little snack at the pekan (sampling some pangkorian seafood, fish sticks, etc) and a little dinner back at the chalet, abrar (our rimba camp guide dude) lit a fire for us! so there we were roasting marshmallows and getting a view of the night sky.

11.00 pm - some hot girls, sweaty guys, and steamy marshmallows

hey there. ordered your drink? cool. pull up a stool and gather round. jin-tian's just about giving out the cards. oh no, wait. there seems to be some sort of a mix up. oh well, we'll let the mafia heads discuss balance matters. in the meantime, let me tell you who we really are. and what we do when we're not playing games.

if you're new to monash you would probably realise, sooner or later, that there are only a few clubs that meet regularly. mbc is not one of them. meet regularly? come on, we have our studies, our social agenda, our yum-chars to think about. oh those in the mm shop department are different lah. they have duties. the rest of us more or less take it easy.

first the ideas would be mooted about at the committee meeting. after agreeing on something to do (what is there to agree on lah just copy from last year) the ideas are then passed on to the activities department where they will be materialised from theories on paper to actual events in real life. the public relations department does the advertising of the event and persuading people to show up. what is a party without people anyway? answer: more food for organizers.

ahaha kidding. really wan.

then when people come, have fun, give a little business to the club, and leave, the editorial department steps in to write up a report or an article about said event. the monash merchandise department mostly just hangs around the mm shop. they sell lots of pens there. no you can't get these from the bookstore. these babies are MONASH pens. to show people you're MONASH MATERIAL.

anyway for those of you who didn't know, we had a trip to pangkor last weekend. 12th to the 14th of november. but that is a story for another post. i just want to ask, for those who didn't go: why?? and for those who DID go: WHYYYYYYYYY?????
